Beavers Beaten By UC-Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Oregon State scored on the first pitch of the game but California-Riverside bounced back for a 21-4 win in the Riverside Baseball Invitational on Saturday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex. OSU (4-6 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) saw its chances for a comeback slip away when the Highlanders (9-5, 0-0 Big West) scored 14 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Beavers reached deep into their bullpen.
OSU concludes the tournament Sunday at 12 noon against San Francisco, the game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340). The Beavers then wrap up their road trip on Monday at 12 noon with a non-league game against Michigan, Oregon State will play its home-opener Friday at 2 p.m. against Gonzaga to start a three-game weekend series.
Against UCR, the Beavers jumped in front 1-0 when Seth Pietsch homered on the first pitch from Julio Fernandez, driving the ball high over the leftfield wall for his second homer of the season. The Beavers tacked on two-run double by Brian Barden and a run-scoring single by Wick Udy to go in front 4-0 in the top of the first.
Chris Biles also had a double in the inning and now has a hit in all 10 OSU games this season, his current hitting streak is 15 games over two seasons.
Pietsch added a single later in the game and finished 2-for-4. With Saturday's homer, nine of his 13 hits this season have gone for extra bases, in Pietsch's career, 14 of his 22 hits have gone for extra bases.
