PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon State's ninth-inning rally fell short as the Beavers lost to Portland 5-4 in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Pilot Stadium. The Beavers (3-5 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) pushed across one run in the final inning and had the bases loaded when the game concluded.
OSU now heads for the Riverside Baseball Invitational. The Beavers open tournament play against Michigan on Friday at 11 a.m., then meet host California-Riverside on Saturday at 4 p.m. and take on San Francisco on Sunday at 12 noon. Saturday's game can be heard on KRKT-AM (990) and Sunday's game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).
On Tuesday, the Beavers rally came a half-inning after Portland (2-3, 0-0 West Coast) had taken the lead with its own three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was OSU's first loss in Portland since 1995, when both schools were members of the Pacific-10 Northern Division, the Beavers had won nine straight at Pilot Stadium.
After Portland took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth, Tom Creighton led off the OSU ninth with a single and Brian Barden hit into a fielder's choice, Chris Biles then walked to put runners at first and second, and Portland sent Brule Speck to the mound to replace Zach Yarbrough.
Seth Pietsch greeted Speck with a sharp single to left that loaded the bases, then Andy Jarvis' sacrifice fly to deep rightfield brought home Barden and sent Biles to third. After Aaron Fausett walked, Will Hudson popped out to shortstop to end the game.
The Beavers left 13 runners on base in the game, including eight in scoring position. OSU fell behind 2-0 after three innings, but run-scoring singles by Jason McBride in the fourth inning and Hudson in the sixth knotted the game at 2-2.
Oregon State took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth, as pinch-hitter Wick Udy lined a no-ball, two-strike pitch into rightfield to drive in Pietsch. The Beavers threatened to add more as they still had the bases loaded with one out for the top of the order, but Kerisi Reynolds grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Portland scored all three of its eighth-inning runs with two out against Beaver closer Jared Sanders. Matt Hollod drove in the tying run with a single to left, then Brock Griffin doubled to right-center to drive in the go-ahead runs.
Pietsch and McBride were both 2-for-4 for the Beavers. Jake Postlewait turned in a strong relief effort for OSU, going three innings and allowing one run on two hits and no walks, striking out two.
