CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Brandon Payton had 21 points and four assists as Oregon State defeated Portland 74-60 on Monday.
Payton, half brother of Seattle's Gary Payton, started in place of Jimmie Haywood, the Beavers' third-leading scorer who quit the team Monday citing personal reasons. Payton made 8-of-12 shots from the field.
Adam Masten added 15 points and Joe See had 13 points for the Beavers (11-14), who snapped a five-game losing streak.
Coky Rochin led Portland (6-21) with 15 points and Eric Knight and Casey Frandsen had 12 points each.
The Beavers got off to slow start, but took control with a 9-0 run midway through the first half.
Payton's 3-pointer and layup gave Oregon State a 44-32 lead with 13:16 left in the game. The lead didn't increase or dwindle much after that.
The Beavers also played without their second-leading scorer, Brian Jackson, who sat out with an abdominal injury.
It mattered little as Oregon State outshot the Pilots 51 percent to 37 percent and outrebounded them 40-31. The Beavers also had 29 attempts from the foul line compared with 12 for Portland.
