SAN FRANCISCO - Gina Schmidt and Lori Daedelow recorded double-doubles to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over San Francisco on Wednesday night. Game scores were 30-19, 30-24 and 30-18.
"It was nice to win 3-0. After going up 2-0 against Sacramento State and going five games in that match, it was nice to put this one away in three," said coach Nancy Somera.
Schmidt, who's had a double-double in every match this year, hit .333 with team-highs of 12 kills and 15 digs, while Daedelow added 14 digs and 11 kills while hitting .455 for the Beavers (3-1).
OSU got off to a hot start, hitting .310 in game one, while the Dons struggled offensively in the opener. The Beavers broke away from a close 17-14 contest and build their lead up to 28-18. Michele Solomon closed the game with a block and a kill to give OSU the early lead.
Jessica Papell started game two off with a service ace, but the two teams stayed together until the midway point when OSU was finally able to break open a game that had been tied 16-16.
After hitting just .196 in game two, OSU picked its offense up and hit a match-best .361 in the final game to complete its first three-game sweep of the season.
"We dominated all areas of the game. We passed well, and our offense was well distributed. Everybody hit .200 or better, and it was nice to see that," Somera said.
The Beavers hit .282 for the night, while the Dons (2-2) were held to a .085 percentage. OSU held the advantage in every statistical category. Led by Michele Solomon's five blocks, the Beavers outblocked USF, 9-4, while OSU also outdug the Dons, 67-50. Papell added 13 digs as three OSU players finished with double-figure digs.
