BERKELEY, Calif. - Gina Schmidt had a match-high 17 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a 3-1 win over California on Saturday night. Scores were 30-22, 26-30, 30-25, and 30-28.
"We didn't play very well, but we'll take it," coach Nancy Somera said. "We weren't very sharp, but I told the team that you know you're a good team when you can win even when you're not playing very well." OSU (10-4, 4-2 Pac-10) hit just .205 on the night but managed to hold Cal (5-6, 1-4) to a .148 mark. The Beavers outdug the Bears, 69-56, and tied their season-high for blocks with 16. Katrina Nelson, who had 11 kills to join Schmidt in double-figures, led the blocking effort with a career-high seven blocks, while Michele Solomon blocked six balls.
Schmidt picked up her 10th double-double of the season as she tied for the team lead with 13 digs. Laura Collins also had 13 digs, a career-high, to go along with 44 assists for her fourth double-double of the season, while Nikki Neuburger added 12 digs. "Laura had a great defensive night," Somera said. "We needed that right side defense."
As has been the case several times this year, Somera credited the players who came in off the bench.
"Good bench play was what won this match for us tonight," she said. Allison Lawrence had a career-high eight kills, hit .400 and added three blocks - the first of her college career. K.C. Frederic played in one game and had three digs, while Amanda Eggert had two blocks in limited action in two games.
