CORVALLIS, Ore. - Felicia Ragland's 26 points weren't enough as Oregon State University's women's basketball team was upset by California, 79-72 on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers fall to 9-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Pac-10 Conference while Cal improves to 5-9 overall and picked up its first Pac-10 victory (1-3).
Oregon State jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, much like OSU's streaking start last Thursday en route to an 81-65 victory against Stanford University, but the Bears would not go away, using an 18-6 run to take the lead at the 9:31 mark.
Turnovers hampered both teams throughout the game, Oregon State fumbled the ball away 13 times in the opening half, which led to 14 California points. The Bears also struggled holding the ball with nine turnovers before the break, but took a 32-31 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the game see-sawed back-and-forth with neither team taking more than a three-point advantage. OSU's Michelle Estell's 3-point basket tied the score at 43-43 with 13:41 left in the game but that was as close as the Beavers would get. The Bears built as much as a 10-point lead and connected on crucial free throws in the final two minutes to hold on for the win.
The Beavers committed 20 turnovers on the night compared to the Bears' 16 miscues.
Both teams shot well from the field, Oregon State connected on 28-of-59 shots for the game while Cal hit 28-of-54. Cal buried 20-of-35 free throws while OSU shot 10-of-16 from the line.
"I thought we were getting called for ticky-tack fouls while some of our players were getting hammered on the inside," said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. "We didn't shoot any free throws in the first half."
Ragland's 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting and 4-of-7 clip from 3-point range tied her career high in scoring. Three other Beavers reached double figures in scoring with junior Ericka Cook canning 7-of-8 shots for 14 points. Nicole Funn just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds while Estell was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line to match her career high with 10 points.
Five Cal players reached double figures in scoring, led by Kenya Corley and Courtney Johnson's 14 points each.
Oregon State hits the road next week to face the Washington schools. The Beavers travel to Washington State Thursday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
