PORTLAND, Ore. - Joscelyn Hannaford had a career-high 16 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over St. Mary's College at the Portland State Conference Challenge on Friday morning. Game scores were 15-4, 15-9 and 15-11.
Hannaford hit an impressive .640 against the Gaels, with no errors in 25 attempts. She also served three aces for the match.
"We did a good job executing on the things we worked on after last weekend," coach Nancy Somera said. "Our hitters did a better job mixing things up, and our offensive rhythm is starting to come around. We had a great performance from Joscelyn Hannaford."
Seven of Hannaford's 16 kills came in the first game, in which the Beavers cruised to a 14-1 lead before running into some offensive struggles late in the game. OSU had three late hitting errors to allow the Gaels to close the score to 14-4, before Gina Schmidt put away the game-winning kill.
OSU jumped out to a 7-1 advantage in game two, but the Gaels fought back to within two points at 8-6 to force the Beavers to take a timeout. St. Mary's got as close as 10-9 before the Beavers regained the serve after a kill from Schmidt. After that, Hannaford and Michele Solomon had two kills apiece to give OSU a 14-9 lead, and the Beavers came away with the victory after Heather Dill's attack went out of bounds for St. Mary's.
The Gaels saw their only lead of the match early in game three when they jumped ahead 3-1, and it would have been 4-1 but Meghan Coolbaugh was called for a back-row attack violation to give the Beavers the sideout. OSU got back-to-back kills from Schmidt to tie the game, but St. Mary's regained the lead with a sideout and a kill from Dill.
The Beavers tied things up again, took the lead and never trailed for the remainder of the contest, although the Gaels came back from an 8-4 deficit to tie the game at 8-8. OSU took a timeout after back-to-back kills from Whitney Hoover cut OSU's lead to 13-11, but Katrina Nelson responded with a kill for a sideout. A SMC hitting error and an ace from Hannaford put the match in the books.
Joining Hannaford in double-figures was Schmidt, who tallied 12 kills for the match. OSU also got a double-double from Brandi Bonnarens, who had 32 assists to go along with a team-high 10 digs.
The Beavers outdug the Gaels, 49-38, and had eight aces while St. Mary's had none.
"We had another steady defensive performance, although our serving could still get tougher," said Somera.
OSU improved to 4-0 with the victory, while St. Mary's dropped to 1-2. The Beavers continue play at the Conference Challenge with a match against Idaho at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
