PORTLAND, Ore. - Angie Shirley had 18 kills for Oregon State, but Idaho's Heather Kniss had 22 to lead the Vandal volleyball team to a 3-1 win over the Beavers at the Portland State Conference Challenge on Friday night. Game scores were 5-15, 15-7, 15-10 and 15-13.
The loss was Oregon State's first of the season, giving the Beavers a 4-1record on the year. Idaho improved to 4-1 after the win.
Shirley, who hit .484 for the match, had six kills in the first game to lead the Beavers to the 15-5 victory in the opener. Joscelyn Hannaford served an ace to finish out the game, extending her streak to five straight matches with at least one ace. She finished the match with three aces, but Idaho responded with serving that caused problems for the Beavers as well.
The Vandals came back from a 3-0 deficit in game two and rattled off five straight points - including two off service aces from Mindy Marques - to take a 5-3 lead. Idaho would hold onto the lead for the rest of the game, although the Vandals missed three game-point opportunities before scoring the game-winning point off a Beaver hitting error.
OSU struggled in game three as Idaho jumped out to an 8-1 lead and eventually led 13-3 before the Beavers started a comeback. Katrina Nelson provided a huge spark off the bench, and the Beavers went on a 6-0 run with three kills from Nelson during that span. The Vandals then got back-to-back kills to set up a game-point opportunity at 14-9, but Shirley and Brandi Bonnarens came up with a block for a Beaver sideout. OSU scored on an Idaho error, but a Vandal kill and another ace from Marques gave Idaho a 15-10 victory.
After falling behind 5-0 early on in game four, the Beavers came back to tie things up at 5-5. OSU broke away from a 9-9 tie with a 4-0 run, but back-to-back Beaver errors ended the run. With OSU leading, 13-11, the Vandals got another kill for a sideout and closed to within a point off another Marques ace. Another Beaver hitting error and Idaho kill gave the Vandals a match-point opportunity with Marques still serving, and the Idaho junior served her sixth ace of the match to give her team its first ever win over OSU.
The Beavers continue play at the Conference Challenge with a match against San Diego State at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. OSU wraps up the weekend with an 8 p.m. match against host Portland State on Saturday.
