CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State played Portland to a scoreless first half before falling 4-0 in the women's soccer season-opener for both teams Saturday afternoon on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The Beavers (0-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) continue their non-league schedule at home Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Idaho.
Portland (1-0-0, 0-0-0 West Coast) was stymied by Oregon State for the first 45 minutes, as the Beavers continually turned back scoring chances by the Pilots.
"The first half was a great effort," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "They're very good at going down the center of the field, and that's an area where we couldn't allow them to beat us. Then we got a couple of opportunities late in the half to counterattack."
Portland finally broke through OSU's defense for a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the second half, then tacked on two more scores by midway through the final period. Erin Misaki, Vanessa Talbott, Kylee Barton and Lauren Mussallem all found the net for the Pilots.
"On the first goal, we probably should have done a better job of tracking a player," Fennah said. "The second goal involved something we talked about a lot last year - the responsibility of leadership in the center of the defense, and we got caught flat. When you get fatigued, you've got to talk, and we didn't do that.
"The third goal was a scramble - it could have gone in, it could have gone out. Then the fourth goal was similar to the first when we didn't attack a cross. But Portland created some of that by fatiguing us by knocking the ball around."
The Beavers were without four players - senior defender Allison Hamada due to a broken collarbone, and senior defender Christy Castalanelli, junior forward BreeAnna Jolin and senior goalkeeper Jerika Duran due to a two-game NCAA suspension for playing in a non-approved indoor game in the offseason.
"That can't be an excuse," Fennah said. "It did limit us on some options, because Christy Castalanelli is one of our fittest players, BreeAnna Jolin is lively up front and Allison Hamada has started every game since she's been here."
Despite the loss, the Beavers could point to the scoreless first half and also to several sequences in which they moved the ball the length of the field with crisp passing and deft individual maneuvers.
"Coming in, you know you're playing one of the best programs in the country and one of the strongest," Fennah said. "You're going to know exactly where you are. There were some things we did well, and some things we didn't.
"You lose 4-0 and it's frustrating, and some individuals may be frustrated with their performance. Overall, I'd say we're all right and now we just have to go and get after it."
