FRESNO, Calif. - - John Lepak and Dustin Wayne each fired rounds of 2-under-par 70 in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional Tournament to lead the Oregon State men's golf team to a tie for 11th in the 27-team field with a score of 3-over-par 291.
Oregon State needs to finish in the top 10 to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala., May 31-June 3. OSU is tied with Stanford and California one shot behind 10th-place Oregon heading into Friday's second round.
Lepak carded his 10th sub-par round of the season with his 36-34--70 on the par 72 Riverbend Golf Course and is among nine players tied for 15th, including teammate Dustin Wayne. Wayne shot 34-36--70, and both are three shots off the lead.
Anthony Arvidson bounced back from a rough front-nine score of 40 and came in with a 33 to finish at 1-over-par 73, and is tied for 49th.
Pacific-10 runner-up Bryan Geiberger stands at 81 after the opening round.
Oregon State's best finish at the West Regional came in 1994 when the Beavers finished eighth and qualified for the NCAA Championships. OSU finished 14th at last year's Regional.
Arvidson finished highest among OSU golfers at last year's Regional, tying for 36th. Lepak tied for 48th and Wayne tied for 69th.
Brigham Young holds a four-shot lead over second-place Arizona at 12-under-par 276. Manuel Merizalde of BYU and UCLA's Parker McLachlin are tied for the lead with 5-under 67s.
