No. 12 Women's Crew Rows Well Against Tough No. 3 Cal

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - - The No. 12 Oregon State women's crew gave No. 3 California all they could handle on Saturday morning, but OSU's varsity eight came up just seven seconds short of the upset as they rowed to a time of 6:48.16 on the 2,000 meter Redwood Shores course.
After defeating Cal's second varsity eight in last week's San Diego Crew Classic, OSU finished in 7:01.8, but lost to a Cal boat that cut roughly 12 seconds off of last week's time to finish in 6:53.9.
"The second varsity and first varsity were important races for us," OSU coach Charlie Owen said. "Cal made some changes in their second varsity, and they proved they were faster than a week ago. We raced pretty fast, but we definitely found some areas we can improve on."
The Beavers did get wins from the varsity four, novice eight, and freshman four `B' teams though, giving OSU three wins on the day.
The varsity four willed its way to a win in a neck-and-neck race that saw the Beavers finish in 7:53.8, just two seconds ahead of Cal.
The novice eight's time of 7:00.92 was good for a 3 ˝ second win, while the freshman four `B' team left Cal's boat in its wake, winning by better than 35 seconds. OSU's freshman four `A' squad dropped a close race to Cal's boat, losing by 2 ˝ seconds.
"In general, we feel pretty good about the races," Owen said. "It was nice to see the novices and varsity four win. The first varsity really rowed well, but we lost to a crew that is third in the country. Cal is improving, and we're improving at about the same pace," Owen said, in reference to the same seven second margin as last week in San Diego. The varsity eight trimmed better than four seconds from their best time of 6:52.3 last week.
The women will be in Vancouver, Wash. next Saturday as they host Stanford in OSU's first home race of the season.
