TEMPE, Ariz. - Brynnen Guthrie went 2-for-3 with two doubles, but OSU mustered up just one other hit as the No. 11 Oregon State softball team dropped a 6-1 contest to No. 5 Arizona State in the Pacific-10 opener for both teams Friday.
"It was a hard fought Pac-10 battle. Both teams played with great intensity and great energy knowing that it was just a single game," said coach Kirk Walker.
Guthrie helped the Beavers (26-7-1, 0-1) to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after hitting the first of her two doubles to drive in Tarrah Beyster, who led off the inning with a walk.
Guthrie led off the fifth with her second double of the game and fourth overall. She went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Parisa Plant, but Michelle Notaro struck out and Shawna Feldt lined out to the shortstop to end the inning. Shelly Prochaska had OSU's only other hit, a single in the sixth inning.
"Brynnen Guthrie did a phenomenal job at the plate for us," Walker said.
OSU kept its lead until the bottom of the fifth when the Sun Devils (33-5, 1-0) had the bases loaded with no outs. Tarrah Beyster came in to relieve pitcher Crystal Draper, but Beyster gave up back-to-back hits as the Sun Devils continued their rally. ASU ended up scoring three runs on three hits in the fifth and added three more runs in the sixth inning.
Draper, who dropped to 10-2 with the loss, actually gave up just two hits in four-plus innings of work, but she walked five batters and hit another with a pitch. Beyster threw two innings in relief, allowing seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
ASU's Kirsten Voak improved to 22-2, limiting OSU to just three hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. She also went 2-for-3 with three RBI at the plate.
