HONOLULU - A late rally in the seventh inning wasn't enough for the Oregon State softball team, as the Beavers lost to Tokyo Women's College of P.E., 4-3, in the championship game of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational late Sunday evening.
OSU trailed, 4-0, and had just two hits for the game heading into the seventh inning. With one out, Michelle Chariton and Shawna Feldt got back-to-back singles to start the comeback. Cara Maxey struck out for the second out of the inning, but Shelly Prochaska came up with a base hit to score Chariton and put runners on first and second. Tarrah Beyster then picked up OSU's fourth hit of the inning, and Prochaska and Feldt both scored on an error by Tokyo left fielder Shiho Mitsuki, but Jenni Jodoin struck out to end the game.
Tokyo WCPE improved to 7-0 to finish the tournament with a perfect record, while OSU claimed a 5-2 record and second place, with both its losses coming against Tokyo.
Tokyo WCPE pitcher Mariko Masabuchi held the Beavers to six hits with 10 strikeouts. She was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Pitcher, while teammate Mayumi Hirshita was named the tourney's Most Valuable Player.
Oregon State placed four athletes on the all-tournament team, with Beyster, Brynnen Guthrie, Crystal Draper and Steph Adams all being recognized.
