ALBUQUERQUE, New Mex. - - Oregon State's baseball team wrapped up its weekend at the Spalding Baseball Fiesta with a decisive 16-2 victory over Kansas State (2-1) on Sunday in Albuquerque. OSU (1-2) got six strong innings of work from starting pitcher Mark Newell, and tallied 16 hits on the day.
"I felt good out there," said Newell. "I was throwing the ball down in the zone and throwing strikes. I had real good ball movement."
The game was still in doubt after the fourth inning, with the Beavers leading 3-1, until OSU put up seven runs in the top of the fifth. Joe Gerber, who went 3-4 on the day with three RBI, led the 5th-inning attack with a 2-run double, while Eric Stark, Bryan Ingram, Brian Barden, and Rod Gott joined in the fray with RBI-singles.
"This was important to get a win with a club with so many new faces," OSU head coach Pat Casey said of the game. "It helps when you have a pitcher come and establish himself early."
Gott knocked one out of the park en-route to a 2-4 performance, and Gerber, Ingram and Stark each had two hits for the Beavers. Senior Drew Hedges brought home three runners for OSU with a bases-loaded, pinch-hit triple in a five-run seventh inning. Every starter had at least one hit for the Beavers.
"This was a confidence booster for us," said Newell. "It shows what we can do when we do the little things."
Oregon State's next action will be in a three-game series at Fresno State beginning Friday, Feb. 18.
