LOS ANGELES - The 24th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team had to count four falls to finish in third place at the four-team UCLA Invitational on Sunday. The Beavers scored a 193.375, behind No. 5 UCLA (196.925) and No. 22 CSU-Fullerton (194.025). San Jose State was fourth with a 190.00.
OSU had to count three falls on beam and one on bars en route to its lowest team score in four weeks.
"I'm disappointed in their performance, and I'm disappointed that they let an opportunity slip through their fingers," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "It was surprising to see so many falls on beam. They had a great workout this week, so it was unexpected. We'll just have to work on some more pressure situations in the gym."
The Beavers opened up the competition on bars, scoring a 48.600 despite a fall and a major form break. OSU was led by Jerra Lopez, who scored a 9.85, while Annette Taylor and Stephanie Bychowski each turned in 9.825 routines.
UCLA's Onnie Willis received a perfect 10.0 on her vault to help lead the Bruins to a 49.425 team score after one event.
The Beavers, who were in second place after the first rotation, dropped to fourth place after two events after scoring a season-low 46.90 on the balance beam. Only Katrina Severin (9.75) and Stephanie Bychowski (9.525) managed to stay on the beam for their entire routines as the Beavers had four falls and were forced to count scores of 9.25, 9.225 and 9.15.
Meanwhile, UCLA built its score up to 98.875, more than two points ahead of CSUF, which was in second place with a 96.625 after two rotations.
OSU made up some ground and moved into third place with on strong showing on floor in the third rotation. The Beavers tied their season-high with a 49.200, highlighted by a 9.90 from Lara Degenhardt. OSU also got 9.85 routines from Tanya Ricioli, Severin and Lopez.
That floor performance gave the Beavers a 144.70, just .275 behind Fullerton. The Bruins maintained a strong lead, with a 147.425 entering the final rotation.
The Beavers closed out the meet with a 48.675 on vault, led by Severin's 9.85 and Degenhardt's 9.825.
