Jason Heide had 14 points and seven rebounds Friday to lead Oregon State to a 60-37 victory over Appalachian State in the opening round of the Big Island Invitational Tournament.Brian Jackson added 14 points and Jimmie Haywood 10 as the Beavers (3-0) shut down the Mountaineers.
Appalachian State (1-2) shot 13-of-46 (28 percent), even though it outrebounded Oregon State (35-34). Shawn Alexander led the Mountaineers with 10 points and six rebounds, the latter matching teammate Buddy Davis' total.
Mike Cokley and Josh Steinthal hit 3-pointers to close out the first half, giving the Beavers a 32-19 lead. Appalachian State, with Davis scoring four points, got to within nine, could get no closer as Heide, Jackson and Haywood took over.
Over the final 20 minutes, the trio combined 27 points.
