FAIRBANKS, Alaska - OSU wrapped up the 1999 Nanook Classic with a three-game sweep over host Alaska Fairbanks (15-1, 15-8, 15-4) to place second in the four-team tournament.
Sarah Bjeldanes, who had nine kills and 10 digs in the win over UAF, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and teammate Angie Shirley earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Shirley, along with Gina Schmidt, each had a match-high 10 kills in the victory over the host Nanooks. Schmidt hit an impressive .769 in the match, with no errors in 13 attempts.
The Beavers (5-2) cruised to an easy 14-0 lead in the first game, but an OSU service error and a kill from Kamilah Webb put an end to the shutout as the Nanooks scored their only point of the game. But after a UAF service error, Schmidt closed out the game with a kill.
UAF (3-3) rallied back in game two, scoring the first three points of the game. The Nanooks held a 7-5 lead at one point, but a kill by Shirley results in a sideout, and OSU scored five straight points off four Nanook errors (one was blocked by Shirley and Bjeldanes) and a kill from Bjeldanes. The Beavers never relinquished the lead, but UAF did not allow OSU to score more than two points back-to-back for the remainder of the game.
After jumping out to a 10-4 lead in game three, OSU traded sideouts with UAF. Once the Beavers regained the serve, they put the game away with five straight points, two off UAF errors (including a block from Schmidt and Michele Solomon), and one from an ace by Brandi Bonnarens. OSU wrapped up the game with back-to-back kills from Schmidt and Bjeldanes.
Bjeldanes finished the tournament with 49 kills, tops among all players in the Classic. She hit .347 (49-15-98) and had 38 digs, one shy of leading the tournament in that category as well. Shirley hit .390 for the weekend, with 45 kills and 15 blocks. It was the second time in as many weeks that Bjeldanes garnered all-tournament honors and the first time for Shirley this season.
