IRVINE, Calif. - Shannon Anders scored a game-high 22 points to lead UC Irvine to its first ever win over Oregon State as the Anteaters defeated the Beavers, 68-46, at the Bren Events Center Friday evening.
The 22-point loss was the biggest non-conference defeat for OSU since falling to Vanderbilt by 21 points in Corvallis in 1994-95. It was UCI's first win over the Beavers in five tries.
The Beavers (2-2) opened up the contest with a 9-6 lead, but the first half was a seesaw battle that saw four ties and four lead changes. UCI (4-1) broke a 15-15 tie on a field goal from Megan Stafford to give the Anteaters the lead for the rest of the half.
UCI built its lead to 10 points at 29-19, but OSU's Felicia Ragland and Chassie Wiersma scored the final two field goals of the half to send the Beavers into the locker room with a six-point deficit at 29-23.
The Anteaters opened the second half on a 5-0 run, but the Beavers responded with a 6-0 run of their own to get within five points at 34-29. That was the closest OSU would come as UCI outscored the Beavers 34-17 for the rest of the game.
Ragland tied her season-high with 13 points, including nine in the first half, to lead the Beavers, and Wiersma added a season-high for OSU, but no other OSU players scored more than six points. UCI had three players in double-figures.
The Beavers were outrebounded, 35-33. Chelsea Mackey had a game-high 12 rebounds to lead UCI, while OSU was led by Sissel Pierce with seven boards.
UCI also led in steals (7-6), blocks (6-1) and assists (14-7).
The Anteaters shot 47.9 percent for the game, including 54.5 percent in the second half. The Beavers shot just 33 percent for the night and just 27.6 (8-29) percent in the second half.
OSU also failed to make a 3-point basket for the first time in their last 13 games, despite seven attempts from long-distance range. UCI capitalized on four of its 12 3-point attempts.
The Beavers return to action Sunday, December 5 when they play at Long Beach State at 2 p.m.
