Beavers Begin With A Win

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Felicia Ragland had 13 points and Sissel Pierce 10 as Oregon State opened its women's basketball season with a 65-47 win over Portland State on Monday night at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers (1-0) held PSU (0-2) scoreless over the last four minutes of the game to pull away for the win.
OSU now plays host to the Beaver Classic this Friday and Saturday. In Friday's doubleheader, Marquette will play Pacific (Calif.) at 5 p.m. and Oregon State will meet Idaho State at 7 p.m.
Against Portland State, Ragland scored all 13 of her points in the first half as OSU led by as many as 23 points before intermission. Oregon State was up 37-14 when Michelle Estell hit a free throw with 3:41 to play in the half, but PSU crept back within 42-29 by halftime.
The Vikings cut the gap to 42-36 when Shannon Spies hit a layin with 16:53 remaining, and Portland State was still within 53-45 with 6:11 left after a jumper by Kellyann Duckworth. OSU scored the next four points, though, getting a pair of free throws by Estell and a jumper by Reda Petraitis to make it 57-45 with 4:34 left.
After a PSU bucket by Robbie Nix with 4:22 left, the Beavers scored the game's final eight points. OSU finished the game with all 10 players who saw action break into the scoring column.
Pierce had nine rebounds to go along with her 10 points, while Petraitis finished with six points, nine rebounds and three steals. For Portland State, Monique Zampera had 12 points and Nix 10 scored points.
Oregon State finished with a 46-30 edge in rebounds and the Beavers forced Portland State into 29 turnovers.
