CORVALLIS, Ore. - Hitting errors proved costly for the Oregon State volleyball team Friday evening as the Beavers fell to Arizona State in three games at Gill Coliseum. Game scores were 15-6, 15-10 and 15-6.
The Beavers (8-17, 2-15 Pacific-10) hit just .016 on the night, with just two more kills than hitting errors (33k-31e). Michele Solomon had six kills and hit .267 for the match, but no other OSU players hit better than .077.
"In spurts, we played some of the best volleyball we've played in awhile. Defensively, we played at the level necessary to beat ASU, but offensively, we had too many hitting errors," coach Nancy Somera said. "Those hitting errors were partly due to some inconsistencies in our passing, but we are improving technically in that skill. We just need to learn to do it under pressure."
ASU (14-11, 10-8) was led by Jami Coughlin, who had a match-high 10 kills to go along with a .320 hitting percentage. Laura Hibsman hit .350 with eight kills, and Amanda Burbridge posted a match-high 13 digs for the Sun Devils.
Solomon and Joscelyn Hannaford each had a career-high eight digs to lead OSU's defense. Nikki Neuburger also tallied eight digs, and she served a match-high three aces as well. Gina Schmidt had a team-best nine kills for the Beavers.
The Sun Devils prevailed in every statistical category. ASU outkilled OSU, 39-33, outdug the Beavers, 50-43, and had nine blocks to OSU's eight. Both teams had five aces.
OSU wraps up the season Saturday when the Beavers host No. 19 Arizona at 7 p.m.
