Oregon State women's rowing head coach Kate Maxim announced the addition of assistant Shelby Larkin to the staff on Monday Aug. 21, 2023.
"I am thrilled to welcome Shelby back to Beaver Nation as our newest assistant coach," Maxim added. "Shelby was the first recruit we signed when I came on as head coach in 2017 and she was central in creating a team culture based on connecting holistic development to competitive performance on the racecourse. Her passion for Beaver women's rowing and the Corvallis community is invaluable and she is eager to create that experience for our current and future student-athletes.
Larkin spent the past season as an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount University under the mentorship of OSU alumni and former OSU associate head coach Allison Foster, helping guide the Lions to a third-place finish at the 2023 WCC Championships, while five Lions were named to the WCC Women's Rowing Awards and Honors List.
"That coaching lineage and strong connection to Oregon State combined with a remarkably work ethic, eagerness to learn and compelling communication skills makes Shelby an outstanding fit for our coaching staff and rowing program.
"Shelby will lead the novice tryout process and assist in supporting the onboarding of all first-year rowers to our team. I know her love for OSU rowing will be infectious and her understanding of how to build culture from within the team will be a tremendous resource to those young athletes," Maxim concluded."
"I'm incredibly excited to be returning to my alma mater as well as a program that fosters and upholds the unique and special integrity of all its student athletes," said Larkin. "Oregon State, Corvallis and the Pacific Northwest was a grounding place for me as a student-athlete. I happily await the new opportunities that I will get to achieve in my coaching career as a Beav."
A four-year letterman for the Beavs, Larkin competed in all six races during the spring of her senior season, with each appearance in the 2V8, finishing first vs. Washington State, at Iowa and at the Dexter Invite. She was part of the 2V8 that took fourth at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships and finished second in the C Final at the NCAA Championships.
As a junior, Larkin rowed in the stroke seat of the 2V8 at the first Washington State dual and Big Ten Double Dual, while racing in the 6-seat of the 2V8 at the Pac-12 Invite, Dexter Lake Invite, second Washington State dual, and Pac-12 Championships.
In her second season with the Beavers, Larkin earned an invitation to USRowing Under 23 National Team Selection Camp. She competed in the 6-seat of the V8 against Stanford, OSU's only spring race before the season was ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During her first season, Larkin raced in the stroke seat to a win in the Collegiate 4+ at the Head of the American. In the stroke seat of the 2V8, Larkin helped the Beavs record wins over Washington State, Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount on the Snake River. She helped guide the Beavs to a pair of wins in the Grand Finals at the Cover Bridge Regatta, racing in the 7-seat of the V8 and stroke seat of the 2V8.
Larkin originally came to Corvallis from Burns, Tennessee, where she was a member of Nashville Rowing, earning a bronze finish in the V8+ at the 2018 Southeast Regionals and a 14th place finish at Junior Nationals.
