Inoke Breckterfield will join the Oregon State football program as the Defensive Line Coach, Head Coach JaMarcus Shephard has announced.
"I see it as an honor and a privilege to have Inoke Breckterfield join our staff at Oregon State University," Shephard said. "He stands as the pillar of what success looks like in terms of how you play the game at this university, He has the ability to recruit, develop and inspire young men across college football and has been that pillar of success at the various programs he has been at in his career."
Breckterfield played for the Beavers from 1995-98 and was a Third Team Associated Press All-American and won the Pac-10's Morris Trophy Award as the top defensive lineman in the league, as voted on by the conference's offensive linemen, in 1998.
He was a volunteer assistant coach at Oregon State in 2006 and a graduate assistant/defensive line coach for the Beavers in 2007 and 2008.
"It is an honor to return to my alma mater to coach young men who will work the right way to make Beaver Nation proud," Breckterfield said. "I have a great deal of respect for Coach Shephard in the way he handles himself as a leader and mentor for student-athletes, alums, donors, and fans. My family and I are extremely excited to be back in Corvallis and cannot wait to see Reser Stadium packed with our loyal and enthusiastic fans who love Oregon State as much as I do."
The appointment is contingent on the completion of all university hiring processes.
Breckterfield has coached the defensive line the past two seasons at Baylor after working the previous two years at Washington where he helped lead the Huskies to the national championship game in 2023 and an 11-2 record in 2022.
He spent the 2021 season as the defensive line coach at Vanderbilt.
Breckterfield spent six seasons (2015-20) at Wisconsin as an assistant coach leading a defensive line unit. During his time at Wisconsin, the Badgers went 56-19, won five bowl games, claimed three B1G West Division Titles, and played in three New Year's Six bowl games (Cotton, Orange, Rose).
He has also gained experience coaching defensive lineman at Pittsburgh (2012-14), and as the defensive line coach at UCLA (2011), Montana (2010), and Weber State (2009).
Breckterfield has coached some of the top defensive players in the game, including mentoring NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald as his position coach at Pitt.
He began his coaching career under Mike Riley, his former head coach, at Oregon State. After joining the Beavers as a volunteer assistant in 2006, Breckterfield went on to serve as a graduate assistant in 2007 and 2008, working with the defensive line.
The 2008 Beavers finished the season ranked No. 18 in the nation, with a 9-4 record, including a win over Pitt in the Sun Bowl.
A defensive end at Oregon State, Breckterfield finished his collegiate career as the Beavers' career leader in tackles for loss (55.5) and sacks (19.5). He was also named Oregon State's Male Athlete of the Year, was a two-time team defensive MVP, and played in the Hula Bowl.
Following his Oregon State career, he played five seasons in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts (1999-2000) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2001-03). In Breckterfield's initial season with Winnipeg, the Blue Bombers advanced to the Grey Cup final after posting a franchise-best 14-4 mark and tying a CFL record with 12 straight wins.
A native of Kaneohe, Hawaii, Breckterfield earned a bachelor's degree in liberal studies from Oregon State in 1998. He and his wife, Carol, have three sons, Kalevi and twins Rocky and Riley.
