Beavers Stage Late Comeback To Take Opener Over Mercer
March 27, 2026 | Baseball
Â
Easton Talt and Adam Haight were running on the 1-0 pitch to Hubbard, who drove in his second and third runs of the game on a well-lined pitch to the gap in left field. The double capped off a comeback that saw the Beavers rally from two-run deficits twice.
Â
Talt was a in position to score after tying the game on a double to right center earlier in the inning. Haight, meanwhile, reached base when drawing a walk against reliever Braydon Kersey.
Â
The comeback pushed the Beavers (19-5 overall) to a five-game win streak and capitalized on a pitching staff that accounted for 19 strikeouts against one of the nation's best offensive clubs.
Â
Dax Whitney started and gave up three hits and three runs – all on home runs – while striking out 13, his second-highest tally of the night. Zach Edwards, OSU's third reliever of the night, then struck out four in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. And Albert Roblez picked up his eighth save of the season with two strikeouts and a scoreless ninth.
Â
Edwards picked up the win, his first of the season.
Â
The loss went to Mercer (21-5) reliever Collin Ewaldson, who gave up one hit and two runs in 1/3 of an inning. He is 1-1 in 2026.
Â
Oregon State opened the game's scoring when Hubbard drove in Talt on a single in the first. But the Bears battled back and took the lead in the third on home runs by Logan Shepherd and Chris Katz.
Â
Jacob Galloway, who drove in two, hit a sacrifice fly in the third to pull OSU within one, then watched as a Paul Vazquez home run off the batter's eye in the fourth tied the game at three.
Â
Mercer's third home run of the night, coming off Dylan LaPointe, put the Bears up by two in the seventh, necessitating Oregon State's comeback.
Â
Hubbard, Vazquez and Talt all had two hits for the Beavers, who recorded eight as a team in addition to seven walks.
Â
Oregon State and Mercer continue their three-game series Saturday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. First pitch is slated for 3:05 p.m. PT.
