March 20, 2026 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – Adam Haight set a career-high with four hits, including a pair of doubles, and Dax Whitney won his fourth game of the season in Oregon State's 5-1 series-opening victory over UC Irvine Friday night at Cicerone Field.
Haight surpassed with his previous single-game mark with a fifth-inning run-scoring double – his third hit of the day - pushing the Beavers (15-5 overall) to a 2-0 lead. His first of the two-base variety came in the first and led to Josh Proctor's sacrifice fly that put the Beavers on the board.
He also singled in the third and seventh innings.
Whitney went 5 1/3 innings in his sixth start of the season, putting away 11 Anteaters via strikeout. He gave up just one run on a sixth-inning single by Zach Fjelstad.
Whitney is now 4-0 on the year.
The Beavers chased UC Irvine (9-12) starter Trevor Hansen after 5 2/3 innings. The righty scattered seven hits and five runs, walking three with seven strikeouts. He took the loss, dropping to 3-1 on the year.
Oregon State plated three runs in the sixth. AJ Singer drove in the Beavers' third run on a single, and watched when Paul Vazquez drove in Oregon State's fourth run of the game. Tyler Inge then put on a safety squeeze to drive in Singer and produce OSU's fifth run of the ballgame.
Isaac Yeager came on in relief of Whitney in the sixth and proceeded to strike out four in 1 2/3 innings. Wyatt Queen followed him in the eighth and struck out four more for his first save of the season.
Friday's 19 strikeouts marked the team's second-highest mark of the year, trailing 21 against Baylor on Feb. 20.
The teams continue the three-game series Saturday with a 1 p.m. PT first pitch at Cicerone Field. The game will air live on the Beaver Sports Network and ESPN+.
