Beavers Drop DH to Saint Mary's

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team dropped both ends of a league doubleheader to Saint Mary's (Calif.) on Saturday at Kelly Field by scores of 5-4 and 6-4, respectively.
Game 1: Saint Mary's 5, OSU 4
Despite jumping to a 4-0 lead after the first two frames, the Beavers could not maintain the advantage as the Gaels countered with five of their own in the ensuing three innings.
Offensive leaders for the Beavers were Jada Lewis with 3 RBI, Jaeya Butler with three hits and Lici Campbell followed with a pair herself.
Logan Hulon was tagged with the loss after allowing all five of the Gaels' runs on nine hits but struck out eight.
Game 2: Saint Mary's 6, OSU 4
Unable to once again hold onto an early advantage, the Beavers dropped the game – and series – as Saint Mary's used four runs in three innings to pull away.
Following two early Beaver runs across the first two frames, the Gaels generated enough to keep Oregon State at bay despite a late rally.
Tristian Thompson trimmed the deficit down to just a pair following a no-doubt home run to left center in the fifth inning.
Trailing by three at 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh, an Oregon State rally fell short in an effort to either win or at least force bonus softball. Samantha Gutierrez's flyout to right had enough to push Ella Dardis across on a throwing error but retired Isabella Valdez at third to seal the game.
Ellie Garcia was charged with the loss after allowing all six runs, only three of which were earned. She struck out four but allowed eight hits and issued a pair of walks.
Morgan Howey and Thompson led the OSU offense with a pair of hits apiece while Thompson complimented her hits with a game-best two RBI.
The Beavers and Gaels will close the series tomorrow with a matchup set for noon. Action from Kelly Field can be seen on ESPN+.
