SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Madde Sund and Raya Nakao both concluded the opening day of the spring season under par to lead the Oregon State women's golf team at the San Diego State Classic on Monday.
The Beavers posted a 6-over 290-292—582 at the par-72, 6,376-yard Heights Golf Club to put them in fourth place after the day's 36 holes of competition.
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournaments begins 8 a.m. on Tuesday with a shotgun start and live scoring is available at this link.
Sund, a senior from Skollersta, Sweden, and Nakao, a sophomore from Kaneohe, Hawai'i, each shot an even-par 72 in the morning and followed that with a 1-under 71 in the afternoon to sit in a tie for 11th place with a 1-under 143. Sund had seven birdies over the two rounds, while Nakao finished the day with six.
It's the 10th career sub-par round for Sund and the 18th for Nakao who had 14 last season when she set the Oregon State single-season scoring record as a true freshman with a 72.05.
Junior Kyra Ly, a native of Portland, rolled in a team-best nine birdies that helped her card a 3-over 72-75—147 for a tie for 19th place. It's the continuation of a great junior campaign that includes seven of her 14 rounds at par or better.
Sophomore Kelly Hope is tied for 32nd place with a 6-over 74-76—150 and true freshman Clara Alevag is tied for 40th with an 8-over 77-75—152. Hope had one birdie in each of the two rounds, while Alevag had one birdie in the morning round with four on the second 18.
No. 1 Stanford leads the 12-team field with a 28-under 548, as Meja Örtengren led the Cardinal, and took a six-stroke individual lead, after firing a 14-under 68-62—130 that included 16 birdies.
