Beavers Open Spring Season With Top 5 Finish In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon State women's golf team opened its spring season with a Top 5 finish at the San Diego State Classic on Tuesday.
The Beavers concluded the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 17-over 289-295-297—881 at The Heights Golf Club, a par 72, 6,376-yard layout, finishing in a tie for fifth place in the 12-team field.
Kyra Ly led Oregon State with a 1-under 68-74-73—215 to finish in a tie for sixth place, which included 12 birdies over the three rounds, tied for the fourth most in the field.
She now has 12 career Top 10 finishes, the fourth most in Oregon State history, trailing only Kathleen Takaishi (16), Ellie Slama (14), and Danielle Mitchell (13).
A native of Portland, Ly already has four Top 10 finishes and 10 of her 15 rounds in red figures during her senior campaign. The only tournament she did not finish in the Top 10 this season was at the competitive Nanea Invitational where she placed in a tie for 11th.
True freshman Kate Nakaoka posted her third career Top 20 finish with a tie for 17th place after carding a 3-over 73-71-75—219. The 1-under 71 in the second round was the fourth sub-par score in 15 rounds as a collegian.
Nakaoka's other Top 20 finishes were a tie for fourth place at the Molly Collegiate Invitational and 13th place at the Leadership and Golf Invitational in her first collegiate event.
Clara Alevag was consistent all three rounds with a 3-over 75 each time to finish in a tie for 27th place with a 9-over 225. A sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, Alevag had seven birdies in the tournament.
Raya Nakao and Kelly Hope both finished in a tie for 37th place with an 11-over 227, as Nakao shot scores of 78-75-74 and Hope finished with 73-77-77. Hope was one of nine players in the field with an eagle.
Cal State Fullerton won the team title with a 12-under 852 and the Titans' Katharina Zellinger claimed medalist honors with a 9-under 207.
The Beavers have two weeks off before competing at the Bruin Wave Invitational, which is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23 and Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Valencia Country Club in Santa Clarita, Calif.
