YEAR TO REMEMBER
In defeating Santa Clara on Thursday, Oregon State improved its season record to 18-9, which is the highest win total since 2017, when the team won 21 matches. In fact, the 2025 season will go down as just the fourth time that OSU has won 18 or more matches in the last 30 years, having previously reached that win total in 2017 (21-12, 7th Pac-12), 2014 (21-13, t-7th Pac-12) and 1996 (19-12, 7th Pac-12).
Assuming the Beavers' third place ranking in the overall WCC standings holds, it would mark just the second time ever that OSU has finished a season in the top five of the conference standings, and first in the top three, having placed fifth in the Pac-12 in 2001.
IN-STATE
Exactly 90 miles separate the Chiles Center and Gill Coliseum, which plays host to an in-state matchup that has historically been dominated by the host Beavers. Dating back to the first matchup in program history, which took place on Sept. 30, 1980, Oregon State holds a 45-8 advantage in the all-time series and swept the Pilots when last these teams met in October; the Beavers hit .333 and tallied 11 service aces in the win.
CONVERTING
After hitting .319 against Pacific on Nov. 15, the Beavers finished with a .356 clip against Santa Clara, marking the second time this season that OSU has hit .300 or better in consecutive games, having previously accomplished the feat in consecutive matchups against Montana State (Sept. 11 - .400) and UC Irvine (Sept. 12 - .310). Last week's match, which finished as a three-set victory, featured a Jackie Matias double-double (12 digs, 33 assists) and a trio of Beavs who hit .400 or better on at least 15 attempts: Rumel (15 kills, .400), Alana Marrs (10 kills, .667) and Maëli Cormier (nine kills, .400).
SHE'S A FRESHMAN
Marrs' performance against the Broncos was the latest in what's been a standout freshman season, as the Ellensburg, Wash., native enters Saturday's match in second place on the roster for points (282.0) and points per set (2.97) thanks to 213 kills and a team-leading 102 blocks. Her season hitting percentage, .360, ranks fifth among qualified athletes in the West Coast Conference, and she has the potential to etch her name into the program's record book with another strong performance this weekend.
If the season ended today, Marrs' single season hitting percentage would tie Staci Hintze (1996) for second-best in a single season in program history, while also breaking the freshman single season record by nearly one fifth of a point, as Julie Steding (1982) holds the record with a .318 hitting percentage during her freshman campaign.
BEST OF THE BEST
There are 139 athletes in the WCC who have recorded at least one kill this season, 62 who have tallied 100 or more, 26 in the 200-plus club, 10 at 300 or more and five with 350 or more. Entering Saturday's match, Oregon State's Lauren Rumel is at 374 total for an average of 3.82 per set, both of which rank third in the conference, leading the team and setting a new single season career high. Having tallied 182 kills in her first year as a Beav and 333 last season, Rumel is up to 890 kills across three seasons at OSU, an average of 2.71 per set.
HELPERS
Jackie Matias has played a crucial role for the Beavers this season, particularly during conference play. Across 17 matches against WCC opponents, Matias is seventh among all setters in assists (427) and assists per set (6.78), and set a career high with 45 assists and 17 digs in OSU's reverse sweep of Saint Mary's on Nov. 6. The Honolulu, Hawaii, native has also tallied a team-leading 19 aces against conference competition.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
- Regan Shields has appeared in each of the Beavs' last three games, which included a start in the DS/L role against Santa Clara.
- Maëli Cormier hit .400 against Santa Clara, which was the fifth time this season that she has tallied at least nine kills whilst hitting .400 or better.
- Cheyenne Green set a new single game career high for kills against Seattle, recording 10 on a .316 clip, while Tia Shum reached double-digit digs for the 12th time this season with a team-high 11.
- Kamana'o Goldstein finished with two service aces in Seattle, which was her third multi-ace game of the season. Her career high, four, came in a win over LMU on Nov. 9.
BACK THE PAC
Oregon State will close its two-year stint as an affiliate member of the WCC at the conclusion of the 2025 season. Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Texas State and Utah State will join OSU and Washington State in a rebuilt Pac-12 starting next season.
