Beavers Out-Score No. 10 UCLA in First Meet of 2025 Season
January 04, 2025 | Women's Gymnastics
OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Oregon State gymnastics placed second in the first session of the 2025 American Gold Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Classic on Saturday, posting a 195.775 to best No. 10 UCLA (195.250) and finishing half a point behind No. 4 California (196.225).
Jade Carey had a strong performance that culminated in the all-around event title thanks to a 39.625, also claiming top score in the session with a 9.950 on beam and 9.900 on floor that tied for top mark. Her vault (9.875) and bars (9.900) scores finished third.
The back half of the Beaver bars proved to be one of the best groups in the nation last season and that continued on Saturday, as the trio of Jennifer McMillan (9.925), Sage Thompson (9.825) and Carey's 9.990 gave OSU some much-needed momentum in the third rotation.
McMillan competed on three events and had one score in the top-two among all competitors, building off a strong finish to the 2024 season on bars to earn that 9.925. Earlier in the meet, the Charlotte, N.C., native vaulted for the first time as a Beaver and was given a 9.775.
Oregon State saved the best for last, finishing the meet on beam and scoring higher on that apparatus than any other. Lauren Letzsch made her competitive return after missing the 2024 season and earned a 9.825, while Sydney Gonzalez posted a 9.775 in her first action since suffering a season-ending injury against UCLA last season.
Taylor DeVries competed on beam and floor for the first time in her career, also competing on bars.
Oregon State gymnastics returns to action next weekend, hosting BYU at Gill Coliseum.
