Oregon State Welcomes Record Crowd in Win Over No. 22 BYU
January 11, 2025 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The ninth-ranked Oregon State Gymnastics program was in action at Gill Coliseum for the first time in 2025 on Saturday, posting a 196.400 to defeat the No. 22 BYU Cougars.
Jade Carey swept the event title race with four 9.900+ scores, the latest in her legendary collegiate career. The Phoenix native opened Saturday's meet with a 9.900 on vault before a 9.950 on bars and 9.925 on beam, closing out the competition with another 9.950 on floor, finishing with a 39.725 in the all-around.
The performance marked her 17th time posting a 39.725 or higher, but it was just the 18th time in program history that a Beaver gymnast has accomplished the feat. In scoring a 9.900 or higher on all four apparatuses, Carey has now earned a 9.900 or higher in seven of her eight routines this season, the lone outlier being a 9.875 on vault last weekend.
Sophia Esposito, the reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, competed on three events and built upon last week's meet in which the Melville, N.Y. native competed only on beam. After earning a 9.775 for her vault, Esposito led off the beam lineup with strong 9.850 and finished her meet by scoring another 9.850 during OSU's final rotation on floor.
The Beaver floor lineup posted the highest rotation score of any apparatus by either side, combining to score 49.250; all five scores counted were 9.800 or above. Savannah Miller led the rotation off with a 9.850 and was followed by a pair of 9.800s from Karlie Chavez and Sage Thompson, before Esposito's 9.850 and Carey's 9.950 rounded things out.
Thompson had another strong showing for Oregon State on Saturday, competing in three events. The Lehi, Utah, native was given a 9.750 for her vault before earning a 9.800 on both bars and floor.
One week after leading the team in scoring, the Beaver beam lineup stayed the same and once again had a quality showing with a 49.200 rotation score. Esposito built momentum with her 9.850 and was followed by Olivia Buckner scoring a 9.800 and Lauren Letzsch improving on last week's 9.825 with a 9.850 of her own; Sydney Gonzales was given a 9.775 before Carey's 9.950.
Some 6,551 fans were in attendance for Saturday's meet, which made it the 11th-highest attended gymnastics meet in Oregon State history, with more fans than any meet since the program record of 8,859 was set against Utah on March 11, 2023.
Oregon State Gymnastics is back in action next Friday against San Jose State. The action begins at 7 p.m. inside legendary Gill Coliseum.
