Women’s Basketball Away on Thursday, Home on Saturday vs. Portland
January 15, 2025 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State women's basketball opens the weekend on the road at Santa Clara this week before returning home to battle Portland in the friendly confines of Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers are facing the Broncos for the first time in 2024-25, but the two teams did match up in 2023 for an 80-52 OSU victory. Much has changed for each team in between including a new coach for Santa Clara, who has led them to a 9-9 mark thus far.
OSU and Portland last met in the Chiles Center on December 30. The Beavs ended 2024 victorious with a 76-72 overtime victory. Kelsey Rees and Ally Schimel earned WCC Player and Freshman of the Week honors after the victory.

TOO REES-Y
In Kelsey Rees, Scott Rueck has likely found his latest all-conference post. The senior is averaging 16 points and 9 rebounds in conference games, putting her among the frontrunners for WCC Player of the Year. Rees is averaging career-highs in scoring and rebounding in her second year under Rueck's tutelage with 12.8 points (previous high: 4.9), 8.1 rebounds (4.3), and her FG% is down just 2.5% (45.7% to 32.2%) despite taking 5.4 more shots per game as a featured player this year. The senior was named the WCC Player of the Week after recording back-to-back career-highs in scoring with 21 and 25 points on the road in wins over Gonzaga and Portland.
BALANCED ATTACK
One of the Beavers' perceived weaknesses entering the season was the lack of a star player. While that has not turned out to be true (see above) the Beavs are a balanced bunch offensively. Five players have scored 20+ points in a game (Rees, Marotte, Bolden, Ferreira and Heide) and Kennedie Shuler scored 16 at Gonzaga and 17 at Arizona State.

The Beavers don't pass up free points, making 77 percent of shots at the free throw line. As a team, that ranks 25th in the nation and leads the WCC. Seven players are shooting 75% or better at the stripe, led (among players w/ 10+ FTs) by AJ Marotte at 85.7%.
