Late Push Not Enough in 2-1 Loss to Nebraska
September 05, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Megin Turi scored her second goal of the 2024 campaign late in the second half, but it wasn't enough as Oregon State women's soccer fell to the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Paul Lorenz Field Thursday night.
Turi, who scored in two of her final three appearances in 2023, has now scored in two of her last three appearances in 2024. In the 80th minute against Nebraska, Turi took a feed from McKenna Martinez and cut to her dominant foot before firing her shot to the near post, scoring from just outside the 18-yard box.
Martinez put four of her team-leading eight shots on target as the Beavers finished with 16 in the game, which included six on target. The assist was her 10th as a Beaver and first this season.
In net for the Beavers was Mya Sanchez, who was active early. The Cornhuskers scored in the 2nd minute but Sanchez responded with a number of key saves, which included an impressive ninth-minute stop that came off the right foot of a Nebraska attacker sitting just near the edge of the six-yard box.
Sanchez finished the game with seven saves, which marked a new career high.
Though the visitors doubled their tally in the 12th minute, OSU created several chances throughout the first half. Nine minutes later, Valerie Tobias played Carly Carraher through for a one-on-one with the opposing 'keeper who rushed out for a kick save, and a Martinez rebounded effort from distance was also saved.
Ava Benedetti put a header off the frame of the goal in the 31st minute but OSU couldn't find the breakthrough and trailed after 45 minutes.
The Beaver offense out-shot Nebraska in the second half, 10-8, and Turi's goal in the 80th minute provided some much-needed momentum as Oregon State had five shots in the final 10 minutes after the goal, but it wasn't enough as Nebraska held on for the 2-1 result.
With 16 shots, OSU set a new season-high mark as a team while six shots on goal also tied the top mark. Seven Beavers went the full 90 while Martinez finished with 84 minutes played, setting a new season high.
Turi, Martinez and the Beavers return to action this Sunday, hitting the road to face Seattle U. Kickoff against the Redhawks is scheduled for 1 p.m.
