Beavers Win Second Straight with 4-2 Victory
September 28, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – In a game that featured a combined 34 shots and six goals, it was Oregon State women's soccer who came out victorious on Saturday, defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs 4-2 at Paul Lorenz Field.
Goals by Hayden Wilson and Katie Godden, as well as a pair of costly mistakes by the visitors, fueled the multi-goal win, which was the team's first official action in the West Coast Conference this season.
Wilson found the back of the net for the second time this season off a corner kick, heading in a feed from Claire Jones the 32nd minute, tying the game at one after the Zags scored in the 19th minute. Wilson's goal makes her one of three Beavers to have scored at least twice this season.
Holding a 2-1 lead at halftime after a Gonzaga own goal in the 40th minute, the second half brought yet another self-inflicted wound for the visitors, as a misplayed Paola Figueroa cross bounced off the goalkeeper's hands and into the net, putting the Beavs ahead, 3-1, some three minutes into the second half.
The Oregon State onslaught continued shortly thereafter.
Katie Godden drew a foul in the box and stepped up to take the shot from the spot, firing to the 'keeper's right and putting OSU ahead, 4-1, in the 52nd minute. Godden's goal was her first of the season and puts her in a four-way tie for the team lead in points thanks to one goal and two assists.
Though Gonzaga fought back and scored in the 68th, Oregon State's defense stepped up big for the final stretch, holding the visitors without a shot on target and claiming the 4-2 victory.
Wilson, Godden and the Beavers return to action on Wednesday, heading to Stockton, Calif., to face Pacific. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
