Beavers, Hawkeyes Play to ‘No Contest’
August 15, 2024 | Women's Soccer
MISSOULA, Mont. – Oregon State women's soccer program opened its regular season against Iowa on Thursday, playing 46 minutes in a game that was delayed multiple times before being deemed a no contest due to weather.
Iowa broke things open in the 11th minute after a Mya Sanchez save deflected right into the path of a Hawkeye runner, who tapped in the rebound to open the game's scoring; the Hawkeyes would double their lead soon after.
OSU created an opportunity in the 17th minute, when a counterattack resulted in a shooting opportunity for Megin Turi, whose shot from the edge of the box forced a save. Both teams settled in for the remaining half hour and the game went to the break at 2-0 in favor of Iowa.
During halftime, lightning strikes within eight miles of the stadium initiated a delay; the prolonged halftime break would extend to some two hours before both teams returned to the pitch. After a quick warmup, play resumed for some 45 seconds of game action before more lightning caused another delay.
After more time passed trying to wait out the storm, the game was deemed a no contest.
Through 46 minutes of action, the Beavers had 16 different players check in, including a pair of freshmen in Ari Hill and Hayden Wilson, while the team drew six Hawkeye fouls and baited the opposing offense into four offside calls.
Oregon State returns to action on Sunday, playing Montana.
