July 03, 2024 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Former Oregon State outfielder Steven Kwan and catcher Adley Rutschman have each been named All-Stars for the American League, which Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday.
The 2024 MLB All-Star Game will be played July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. PT and will air live on FOX.
Kwan is an All-Star for the first time and with good reason as a key component of the Cleveland Guardians' lineup. The outfielder is batting .362 this season, adding 13 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 24 runs batted in, adding four stolen bases. He's also been stellar in the field, posting a .990 fielding percentage with three assists and just one error in 98 chances.
Kwan played for the Beavers from 2016-18, where he batted .329 with 16 doubles, nine triples and three home runs in 156 games. He also drove in 66, scored 96 runs and swiped 22 bases.
Rutschman is an All-Star for the second time, but a starter for the first time. The Baltimore Orioles' backstop is batting .291 with 12 doubles, 15 home runs and 55 RBI. He's also been excellent in the field, recording a .998 fielding percentage, committing one error in 475 chances.
Rutschman was the 2019 Golden Spikes Award winner and played in 185 games for the Beavers over three seasons. He batted .353 with 39 doubles, five triples, 28 home runs and 174 RBI.
Both Kwan and Rutschman have helped lead their teams to first-place marks in their respective divisions. Baltimore leads the American League East with a 54-31 record, one game ahead of the New York Yankees. Kwan and Cleveland have a 53-30 record and league the AL Central by six games over Minnesota.
