Abby Doerr, Hulon Lead Beavs to Series Win over Utes
April 27, 2024 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team batted around in a five-run fourth for its second consecutive win of the weekend, securing the series against Utah following a 6-3 win on Saturday at Kelly Field.
Facing an early deficit for the second game in a row, the Utes plated a pair to pressure the Beavers (20-25, 8-12 Pac-12) in the contest. The Utes got their two in one swing when Kaylah Nelsen advanced to second off a single and error, which drove in the pair for the early advantage.
Continuing the scoring on an error, Madyson Clark raced home on a miscue by the Utah catcher as Paige Doerr safely got to first to cut the Utah lead in half an inning later.
In the home fourth, the Beavers threatened early and often as they batted around to plate five on their way to a lead they would not cede. Kiki Escobar and Savanah Whatley got the offense going with consecutive singles before Grace Messmer used a sacrifice bunt to push the duo to scoring position. Escobar crossed home a few batters later to tie things after an Eliana Gottlieb walk and a Lici Campbell fielder's choice. With eyes focused on taking the lead, Madison Simon dashed for home on a wild pitch for the 3-2 lead. Abby Doerr – with two away – broke the game open as she slammed a double to right center and brought home Clark, Campbell and Gottlieb for the 6-2 lead.
Utah answered right back with a run of their own following a pair of Oregon State fielding errors on Escobar and Messmer, respectively. The Utes threatened Logan Hulon with loading the bases but could only muster the sole run, cutting the Beaver advantage in half.
Putting the guests on the brink late, Oregon State used consecutive 1-2-3 frames to silence the Utes and pick up the series win.
Hulon (6-10) went the distance (6.0 innings), allowed all three Ute runs off six hits and a pair of walks but fanned one.
Abby Doerr's 3-for-3 day led a Beaver offense that put up seven hits on the Ute staff while four other Beavs – Paige Doerr, Escobar, Simon and Whatley – also added a hit apiece. Complementing her three-hit performance, Abby Doerr's three RBI also led the OSU offense on the day while Gottlieb tallied one on a base on balls in the five-run fourth.
The Beavers will look to complete the sweep tomorrow, on senior day, with the finale set for noon. Action from Kelly Field will be seen on Pac-12 Mountain.
