Cardinal Down Beavs in Saturday Showdown

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Plating at least two runs in five of the game's six frames, eighth-ranked Stanford defeated the Oregon State softball team by a 13-3 margin on Saturday evening.
Once again using early-inning offense, the Cardinal built up a 5-0 advantage on Oregon State (16-23, 4-10 Pac-12) by the third inning to claim the series win. The Beavers answered back in the fourth with three of their own to cut the lead to just two but the Cardinal responded with eight unanswered to put it out of reach.
With the bases loaded and just one away, Kiki Escobar used a sacrifice to left to drive in Paige Doerr to get the Beavs on the scoreboard. On the ensuing at-bat, Grace Messmer cleared the bases with a double to left center, driving in Madison Simon and Savanah Whatley to bring Oregon State within two of the Cardinal.
Stanford responded with eight runs across the final two frames of the day, securing the game in just six. In the fifth, the Cardinal took advantage of Beaver miscues to get three runs back before utilizing a pair of homers to give themselves the decisive 10-run advantage.
Despite striking out seven, Logan Hulon (4-8) was tagged with the loss after surrendering 11 runs – nine earned – in 5.1 frames and 11 hits. Tossing the game's final 0.2, Sarah Haendiges allowed the final two Cardinal runs on three hits and a walk.
Spread over the last three starts, Hulon has registered 21 strikeouts – all against ranked Pac-12 foes – including nine in the finale at Washington two weeks ago.
The series – and season-long six-game homestand - will conclude tomorrow from Kelly Field with a noon first pitch. Fans not in attendance will be able to see the action on the OSU Live Stream and also on Pac-12 Insider.
