Electric Atmosphere, Elite Defense Powers Beavs to Sweet 16
March 24, 2024 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – On a night where shots weren't falling, Oregon State's defense and a boisterous home crowd carried the Beavers to a 61-51 win over Nebraska and into the Sweet 16.
The crowd, another postseason record of 7,227, gave Oregon State a school record for season attendance with 103,110 buoyed the Beavers during the second and third quarters when the team scored just 16 points and went ballistic in the fourth when they scored 26 to pull away.
"Beaver Nation has been showing up for us all year. I'm so grateful to be able to have this game at home in front of all of them and to share that experience with our best friends," Talia von Oelhoffen said.
Defensively, Oregon State held Nebraska to its second-lowest scoring of the season and 21 points below its season average. The Beavers' 10 blocks were one off OSU's NCAA Tournament record and the most all year against the Huskers.
Timea Gardiner keyed the defensive effort with a career-high four blocks while scoring 17 points. Von Oelhoffen paced the offense with 19 points while dishing eight assists and grabbing four rebounds.
"First off, I'm just really thankful, grateful, excited that I get to continue to coach this group. Even if it's for one more game or just one more day, I've just had the time of my life with these guys this year," head coach Scott Rueck said. "And to go to the limit and play as many home games as possible is really special. And to do it in style today, to move on to the 16, it's, you know, what everybody hopes to be a part of."
The Beavers turned Gill Coliseum into an electric factory in the first quarter. After Nebraska took a 4-0 lead, Oregon State ignited the crowd with a 19-4 run. Gardiner scored eight on the run while Raegan Beers added six. Von Oelhoffen tallied four assists.
The Huskers battled back in the second and third, pulling their deficit down to six in the third while the Beavers couldn't get a shot to fall. Von Oelhoffen ended the 12-shot draught but OSU's defense kept them in the game in the middle periods.
Lily Hansford combined with Gardiner and von Oelhoffen to help the Beavs pull away. The sophomore bounced back from a tough shooting stretch in the previous two games to knock down two huge triples in the fourth.
The quarter proved that the Beavers learned from their stretch of five games without Beers during the regular season. With Beers out due to foul trouble, Oregon State still set the nets ablaze with 26 points on 53.5 percent shooting from the floor.
