Munoz Takes Third at NCAAs
March 23, 2024 | Wrestling
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Adding onto his legacy within the Oregon State wrestling program, Trey Munoz (184) capped off another semifinal performance at the NCAA Championships, taking third place in the 2024 competition.
It marks the second consecutive season with both a national semifinal finish and Pac-12 championship, improving from last season's sixth-place finish.
The redshirt junior sealed his podium finish with a hard-fought third-place bout where he denied ninth-seeded Bennett Berge (South Dakota State) from staging a comeback after pinning sixth-seeded Bernie Truax (Penn State) in just 2:29.
In the third-place bout, he raced to a 3-0 lead just nine seconds in after a quick takedown. Berge made it close before the first ended, utilizing a pair of escapes and a takedown to trim Munoz's lead to just 7-5. With the comfort of 1:38 worth of riding time, Munoz clinched the bonus point after using one final escape to put away Berge for the win.
After a minute of no separation in the first bout of the day, one takedown was all Munoz needed to put away Truax as he took it by fall. His win over Truax was the second of the season with the first coming in the home opener against the Nittany Lions where he won 5-2 at decision.
He capped his season with a 24-4 record.
Munoz became just the second Beaver in the Pendleton era to finish in the top four (Grant Willits, 2022 – fourth) and the third to finish inside the top four since Amar Dhesi had a third-place finish in 2019.
Oregon State and Munoz wrapped up the 2023-24 season following the Championships and ended the campaign with a 7-5 dual record. The Beavers closed the Championships with 20.0 points, finishing in 23rd place.
