High Scoring Frames, Hulon's 9 Ks Key to Two Win Day
March 02, 2024 | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif. – High-scoring innings and strong performances in the circle were key to a day two sweep at the Judi Garman Classic for the Oregon State softball team. The Beavers (9-10) took games from Long Beach State (6-0) before run-ruling San Jose State (8-0) in five to building a three-game win streak.
Game 1: Oregon State 6, Long Beach State 0
The Beavers (8-10) used a five-run fourth to break the game open in their favor on the way to the 6-0 win over the Beach.
Oregon State's fourth featured six hits and saw them nearly bat around as the offense sparked. Six consecutive batters reached safely before any were out. Lici Campbell – who also had a solo homer in the first – got the offense going with a leadoff single before Grace Messmer pushed Kaylee Oh – pinch running for Campbell – to third with a double on the next at-bat. Kaiea Higa cleared the bags with a double to right center for the 3-0 lead. Madi Simon followed with a bunt to third as she moved Higa two bases over to third before Paige Doerr singled to right center to bring that pair home. Kiki Escobar followed with a single of her own to drive the last two home.
The Beach got a run back when they pushed across one following the nearly two-hour rain delay in their half of the fifth.
Campbell and Paige Doerr both contributed a pair of hits – including RBI knocks – to the offense. Escobar, Higa, Messmer and Simon also tallied a hit.
Sarah Haendiges tossed a complete game, giving up just the sole run and five hits on the way to her third win of the season. The Upland, Calif., native registered four punchouts but walked three in her third complete game of 2024.
Game 2: Oregon State 8, San Jose State 0 – 5 innings
A career-high nine strikeouts from Logan Hulon and seven runs in the final two innings set the tone for the Beavers in a run-rule 8-0 win, needing just five frames.
Holding a 1-0 lead in the fourth after an Escobar RBI single a frame earlier, the Oregon State bats put up a three-spot in the fourth off one swing when Simon roped a double to the warning track and brought in Gottlieb, Messmer and Paige Doerr to make it 4-0.
Not wanting to cool down, the Beavers' bats stayed hot in what turned out to be the final inning, the fifth. Messmer's squeeze attempt to bring home Escobar proved successful as the Beavs made it a 5-0 game. On the ensuing at-bat with two still on, Charity Sevaaetasi slammed the first pitch she saw to end it with a three-run home run.
Hulon had a career day in the circle - registering nine strikeouts, only yielding two hits and not walking any – in her third complete game of the season. She eclipsed her previous best in punchouts (six) after just 3.0 innings of work. When facing trouble with a leadoff double by the Spartans in the second, the Texan responded with fanning the next three.
Messmer and Simon – each with a pair of hits – led the Beaver offense. Sevaaetasi and Simon each led the squad with three RBI apiece.
Oregon State will finish play in Fullerton at the Judi Garman Classic with another two-game day, taking on Weber State and hosts Cal State Fullerton tomorrow. First pitches are slated for 9 a.m. and approximately 11:15 a.m., respectively. The matchup with Cal State Fullerton can be seen on ESPN+.
