Hainline Homers Twice, Beavers Score Five In Ninth For Comeback Win

Hainline homered in the third for the Beavers' (16-1 overall, 1-0 Pac-12 Conference) first run of the game then spurred the comeback in the ninth with a two-run blast off Micah Ashman as the Utah closer threw his first pitch of the night.
Micah McDowell reached on a bunt single, then Mason Guerra moved him to third on a single to left. Dallas Macias tied the game on a groundout to second, then watched a few batters later as Trent Caraway drilled a two-run single to left.
The comeback came after Utah took a 5-2 lead into the ninth. The Utes scored a solo run in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Neither starter figured in the decision.
Utah (11-5, 2-2) starter Merit Jones stymied the Beavers in six innings of work. He scattered four hits and two runs with five walks and nine strikeouts.
Oregon State starter Nelson Keljo allowed five hits and three runs in three innings of work.
The win went to Tephen Montgomery, his first at Oregon State. The righty picked up three outs in the ninth. He was backed by Bridger Holmes, who earned his third save with a scoreless ninth.
Ashman's night ended after three hits and four runs in 2/3 of an inning. He took the loss and is 0-1.
McDowell, Smith, Hainline and Caraway all had two hits to lead the Beavers. Oregon State tallied 10 hits and took advantage of seven walks.
Next Game
The second game of the series is slated for a 1 p.m. PT (2 p.m. in Utah) start at Smith's Ballpark on Saturday. Utah will provide a live stream, with the link available on osubeavers.com. It can also be found on the Pac-12 Now app for smartphones and tablets.
Oregon State Notes
- Trent Caraway made his first start since the March 3 series finale versus North Dakota State. He singled in his first at bat.
- Nelson Keljo made his third career start and first in Pac-12 play.
- Elijah Hainline has now hit home runs in back-to-back games after finishing with a solo shot against CSUN on Sunday.
- It is the fifth time a Beaver has hit two home runs in a game this season. His second gave the Beavers 30 on the year.
- Hainline is 6 for his last 12 and four extra-base hits with five RBI over the last three games.
- Micah McDowell extended his hit streak to 14 games with a single in the seventh.
- The game marked the first true road contest for the Beavers. OSU opened the year with eight games away from home, but they were all neutral site.
- Oregon State has now tallied at least three extra-base hits in seven consecutive games. The Beavers have totaled three or more in 13 of 16 games this season.
- Travis Bazzana now has 124 career walks.
- The runs in the ninth inning marked the first of the year in the frame for the Beavers.
