Beers-Less Beavers Battle No. 4 Stanford to Final Possessions
February 29, 2024 | Women's Basketball
Oregon State twice brought the game within a single possession in the final minute; OSU faces Cal on Saturday.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 11 ranked Oregon State women's basketball team was in action Thursday night, falling 67-63 to the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal at Gill Coliseum. With the result, OSU's season record moves to 22-6 with the regular season finale slated for Saturday at 12 p.m.
Sela Heide made her third-consecutive start as both offenses struggled early, shooting a combined 4-22 through the game's opening five minutes of action. Lily Hansford found herself on the scoresheet quickly after the first media timeout, cutting backdoor and finishing with a reverse layup off a feed from Donovyn Hunter. The visitors would start to find some offense, however, and took an eight-point lead into the first quarter break.
The Beavs quickly battled back in the second, cutting the lead down to three after Kelsey Rees connected from deep and with a layup on back-to-back possessions, putting the Cardinal lead at 22-19 with 7:09 to go in the second quarter. An Adlee Blacklock three coming out of the mid-quarter media timeout made the deficit just one less than three minutes later.
Much like the first quarter, however, Stanford responded down the stretch, taking a 35-26 advantage into halftime.
Talia Von Oelhoffen was the first Beaver to hit double-figures with a step-back jumper early in the second half, igniting a hot-shooting stretch for the Tri-Cities, Wash., native who would account for nine points in the third period alone. Both teams quite literally traded buckets in the third quarter, as neither side was able to score without a response from the other until Timea Gardiner and Dominika Paurová went back-to-back in the final 90 seconds to cut the lead down to five with 10 minutes to play.
Gardiner connected on a triple one minute into the fourth quarter that sent Gill Coliseum into a frenzy, using a Paurová feed to connect from the far-side wing and cut the deficit down to just four points. Gardiner would later draw a charge that put Stanford's Cameron Brink at four fouls, once again earning a raucous praise from Beaver faithful.
Von Oelhoffen cut the lead down to a single possession several times in the game's final minutes, connecting on a pair of free throws with exactly three minutes to play, adding a layup with 1:06 on the clock and making another free throw with seven seconds on the clock; despite the late buckets, Stanford held on for the 67-63 victory.
The scoring outburst was a season-high mark for Von Oelhoffen, who finished with 27 points (11-20 FG, 3-4 FT), four rebounds, four assists and one block while also serving as one of the primary defenders on Stanford's Kiki Iriafen down the stretch. Gardiner finished the game with 15 points (6-15 FG, 3-8 3PT) to go with three boards and a team-leading two blocks, her ninth-consecutive double-double as the sophomore from Ogden, Utah, continues to make her case for the Pac-12 Sixth Player of the Year award.
Paurova finished with eight points and four rebounds as Heide grabbed six rebounds across 16 minutes played.
As a team, OSU shot 25-64 (39.1%) from the field while defensively keeping the Cardinal below their season shooting averages both from the field and from deep. With 11 offensive rebounds, the Beavers scored nine second chance points and 18 in the paint, while four blocks and four steals contributed to 12 Cardinal turnovers and 13 points off turnovers; OSU finished with just eight turnovers in the game.
Beaver women's basketball returns to action Saturday afternoon, hosting the California Golden Bears. Tipoff at Gill Coliseum is scheduled for 12 p.m. and fans can purchase tickets at beavertickets.com.
