Raya Nakao Continues Fabulous Frosh Season At Pac-12 Preview
February 21, 2024 | Women's Golf
KAILUA-KONA, Hawai'i – Raya Nakao didn't lose any momentum during the winter break as she led the Oregon State women's golf team in its first tournament of the spring season at the Pac-12 Preview on Wednesday.
Nakao, a true freshman from Kaneohe, Hawai'i, has been sensational in her first year with the Beavers, standing out once again with a 1-over 73-73-74--220 to finish in a team-best tie for 13th place on her trip back to the Aloha State.
She had nothing worse than a bogey and dropped in 11 birdies during the three rounds. Her scoring average of 2.78 on the par-3's was tied for the second best in the 60-player field and she posted an average of 4.67 on the par-5's, tied for the ninth best in the tourney.
Nakao finished fifth at the Dick McGuire Invitational in her first collegiate event in September, recorded a tie for fifth at the Molly Collegiate Invitational and posted a tie for 11th at the Stanford Intercollegiate in the last tourney of the fall season.
As a team, the Beavers finished seventh in a field that included nine Pac-12 teams after shooting a 20-over 294-298-304--896 at the par-73, 6,449-yard Nanea Golf Club.
Chayse Gomez and Kyra Ly both finished in a tie for 28th place with a 6-over 225, as Gomez recorded scores of 75-74-76 and Ly finished with 75-72-78.
Gomez had 15 birdies in the tournament, tied for the second most, with five of them coming in the final round. Ly's best round was a 1-under 72 on Tuesday that gave her 10 sub-par scores in her two-year Oregon State career
Madde Sund posted her best score of the season in the first round, a 2-under 71, and finished in a tie for 35th place with a 9-over 71-81-76--228.
True freshman Kelly Hope, who made her collegiate debut with the team this week, improved after the first round and finished tied for 53rd with a 23-over 83-79-80--242.
UCLA pulled away from the 12-team field in the final round to win the title with an 11-under 865. Stanford finished second with a 7-under 869 and Arizona was third with an even-par 876.
The Bruins' Zoe Campos claimed medalist honors with an 8-under 211, winning the individual title by one stroke over Amari Avery of USC and Paula Martin Sampedro of Stanford who both finished with a 7-under 212.
The Beavers have two weeks off before competing at the Meadow Club Collegiate in Fairfax, Calif., on Monday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 5.
