KAILUA-KONA, Hawai'i – Madde Sund fired a 2-under 71 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the opening round of the Pac-12 Preview on Monday.
The Beavers started their spring season with a 2-over 294 at the par-73, 6,449-yard Nanea Golf Club and sit in eighth place in the 12-team field with 36 holes to play. The four golfers who contributed to the team's score each dropped in four birdies on the day.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday with a shotgun start and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Sund, a junior from Skollersta, Sweden, was 2 over through her first four holes but caught fire the rest of the round with four birdies and 10 pars to post a 71 that has her in a tie for 11th place. The birdies came on the par-4, 379-yard 10th, par-5 464-yard 13th, par-4. 303-yard 14th and par-5, 536-yard 18th holes.
During the past fall, Sund shot four rounds in red figures with the best being a 2-under 70 at the Molly Collegiate Invitational and the Ron Moore Intercollegiate. Her best career score is a 4-under 68 as a sophomore at the 2023 NCAA Regionals in Westfield, Indiana. Sund's best career finish is a tie for seventh place at that same event.
True freshman Raya Nakao, who led Oregon State with a scoring average of 71.40 in the fall, was steady throughout the round with four birdies and four bogeys for an even-par 73. She was 1 over through her first five holes but played the rest of the way at 1 under and is tied for 20th place.
Chayse Gomez and Kyra Ly both carded a 2-over 75 to start their spring season.
Gomez, who had four birdies and six bogeys, started the day on the first hole and rolled in birdies on the par-4 third and par-4 fifth holes. She added another birdie on the par-4 14th and completed the round with a birdie on the par-5 finishing hole.
Ly had four birdies in the opening round but a double-bogey on the par-5 sixth kept her from a better score. She had three birdies on the course's front nine and played consistent golf on the back with one birdie, seven pars and one bogey.
True freshman Kelly Hope, who is competing in her first collegiate tournament with the team, finished the day with a 10-over 83.
Arizona posted an 11-under 281 to hold a one-stroke advantage over USC (10-under 282), while the Trojans' Bailey Shoemaker has the individual lead after carding a 6-under 67.
