Hamblin Takes 157-lb. Title as Beavs Finish Second at Reno
December 22, 2024 | Wrestling
RENO, Nevada – The Oregon State wrestling team closed the calendar year by competing in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
CJ Hamblin ran the table for the 157-pound championship to highlight the day for the Beavers. On his way to the title, he tallied wins by major decision and technical fall before clinching the last of his six wins by sudden victory over Southern Oregon's Aaron Gandara. Hamblin finished an undefeated weekend after claiming a win in the Beavers' dual against Utah Valley on Friday.
Competing unattached, Justin Rademacher (197) swept his bracket to win the championship. He used a second-period takedown to defeat Oklahoma State's Cody Merrill by decision at 4-2. The Oregonian tallied consecutive technical fall wins to start his title-winning day and a major decision clinched his trip to the final bout. Following the competition, Rademacher was named the event's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Ayden Garver fell short in the championship bout in the 149-lb. division, after four consecutive victories – including a pin – to open his competition. Standing in his way to the final was a Pac-12 opponent in Cal Poly's Gavin Fernandez but one takedown was all Garver needed to take it at decision at 4-1.
In the heavyweight class, Charley Hastriter responded quickly from his sole setback of the day – in the semifinals - to secure third place. The Idaho product battled with a trio of gritty wins, including one at sudden victory, to place him into the weight's last four. In the third-place bout, he used the sole takedown – in the second – to launch him to the 4-2 win over Western Wyoming's Dmarian Lopez.
Chase DeBlaere (133) and Kekana Fouret (165) both turned in sixth-place finishes in Reno. DeBlaere battled to the end in close competitions after opening the day with three consecutive wins. Fouret did not allow his opponent to make a mark on the board with a major decision win (at 11-0) and 5-0 at decision.
Murphy Menke (165) had a 4-1 day that saw himself finish in fifth. He strung together consecutive 17-1 technical fall wins to open his day in Reno before using back-to-back wins at decision to end it. Hunter Taylor (125) turned in a 4-2 day for a sixth-place finish. The true freshman responded from a technical fall setback to win three of his last four bouts, which included a win by fall.
Oregon State will open the new year with a dual at sixth-ranked Ohio State on Sunday, January 5th. The first bout is set for 10 a.m. PT and can be seen on B1G+.
