Beavers Defeat Westmont in Exhibition

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State handled business in its opening exhibition, beating Westmont 59-51on Friday night.
Kelsey Rees recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, adding two blocks. AJ Marotte chipped in 16 points to tie for the team lead. Sela Heide shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor en route to nine points.
Beaver Nation got its first look at Suana Yepes, Catarina Ferreira, Tiara Bolden, Lucia Navarro, Ally Schimel and Cloe Vecina on Friday night as well.
The Beavs got good shots early but couldn't get them to fall, shooting 25 percent at the opening media timeout. The remainder of the quarter saw points come at the free throw line as OSU canned 9-of-12 free throws, unable to get far into an offense while dealing with nine Westmont fouls in the period.
The slow start continued into the second quarter before fans were treated to classic Beaver basketball in the third. Rees keyed a 16-7 start to the period as the Beavers extended the lead to 45-31 the period's first media timeout. Kennedie Shuler dropped dimes left and right, dishing four assists in the third quarter's first five minutes.
Defensively, the Beavs notched four blocks in the third quarter's first six minutes with Shuler, Heide, Rees, Marotte each rejecting a shot.
The fourth quarter brought more of the same. Heide and Marotte keyed the scoring with baskets inside as the Beavers maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the period.
The Beavers head to Fort Collins, Colorado to open the season against Colorado State on Friday, November 8. The game will tip at 4:30 p.m. PT with a stream on the Mountain West Network.
