Beavs Battle At #2 UCLA
January 07, 2024 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Oregon State hung tough at no. 2 UCLA on Sunday before a dry spell in the third quarter undid the upset bid in a 65-54 loss.
Raegan Beers had another excellent game with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. The sophomore also dished two assists. Talia von Oelhoffen also scored in double figures with ten points.
The game's opening quarter was a back-and-forth period that saw the Bruins take an early 15-10 lead. The Beavers opened on a 5-0 spurt with Beers and von Oelhoffen doing much of the damage before UCLA countered with a 7-0 run and outscored the Beavs 8-6 the remainder of the way.
The squads battled to a near draw in the second. Beers went to work with seven points while von Oelhoffen and Gardiner each contributed four. OSU worked around some trouble with turnovers and entered the break down 31-26.
UCLA began to pull away in the third, going on a 9-0 run while the Beavs struggled to get good shots. OSU was held scoreless for more than five minutes in the middle of the period. Beers ended the run with four straight points, setting up a comeback attempt.
The Beavers refused to quit and trimmed the deficit to six late in the fourth on a Timea Gardiner triple, but the Beavs missed opportunities to close the gap further and UCLA pulled back out to the final margin of 65-54.
Up next, the Beavers return home – where they are undefeated so far in 2023-24 – to battle Arizona at 7 p.m. on Friday.
