GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – Nicolas Quintero ended his first trip as a Beaver in a tie for sixth place as the Oregon State men's golf team concluded its season-opening trip to the Folds of Honor Collegiate at the par-71 American Dunes Golf Club on Wednesday.
OSU, as a team, finished in a tied for 10th with a 32-over 884 final score.
Quintero finished with a tournament-best 13 birdies over the 54-hole event. He picked up four on Wednesday in the final round, which saw him shoot par at 71. Three of his four birdies came on the back nine.
Mateo Fuenmayor posted his strongest day of the tournament, also finishing at par with a 71 in round three. Three of his six birdies at the event came on Wednesday. Fuenmayor shot a 13-over 226 for the trip, finishing in a tie for 55th.
Rylan Johnson was second among OSU's competitors, finishing in a tie for 16th. He shot a 4-over 217 over 54 holes after posting a 3-over 74 on Wednesday. Johnson, in his first tournament as a sophomore at OSU, connected on eight birdies.
"Nicolas and Rylan both played some really strong golf this week," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "I thought the two of them really competed at a high level, were into each shot, and did their best to keep their mistakes to a minimum.
"I'm excited about what Nicolas has brought to the team already in a short time. It's been an unusual start to the season with a tournament this early, but I think the way we have spread out our events will allow us to prepare well and compete within the team to determine our best starting five.
"It's a long season. It's nice to get the first one out of the way."
Alfred Raja shot a 5-over 76 on Wednesday, ending the tournament tied for 58th with a 15-over 228. He totaled nine birdies overall.
Stanley Lin made his OSU debut, finishing in 74th at 23-over 236. He shot a 7-over 78 to conclude play, posting two of his six birdies on Wednesday.
