Men’s Golf Tied For Second In Day One At Husky Invite
September 18, 2023 | Men's Golf
BREMERTON, Wash. – Mateo Fuenmayor and Alfred Raja each shot 2-under par over 36 holes to lead the Oregon State men's golf team at the first day of the Husky Invitational on Monday. The Beavers, as a team, are tied for second as the tournament nearly finished 36 holes at the par-72, 7,115-yard Gold Mountain-Olympic Course.
Three of the 14 teams at the invitational were unable to finish their second round of play due to darkness and will finish it Tuesday morning before the field plays the final 18 holes.
"From start to finish, I thought our guys played some great golf," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It was really awesome to see Rylan (Johnson) and Alfred battle back on the second nine this afternoon."
Mateo Fuenmayor paced the Beavers, along with Raja, over the first 36 holes. He opened the day with a 2-under 70, then picked up a 1-under 71 over the final 18 to finish at 3-under on the day. He will enter the second and final day of action in a tie for 12th.
Fuenmayor tied for the tournament lead with 13 birdies on the afternoon.
Raja was consistent on the day. He shot a 1-under 71 in both the first and second rounds to finish at 2-under on the day, and posted nine birdies on the day.
Collin Hodgkinson's first-round 7-under 65 tied for the fifth-best single-round in OSU history. He's the first to go 7 under since Jackson Lake at the 2022 Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate, and just the 12th Beaver ever with a 7-under or better. Hodgkinson finished tied for 20th with a 1-under 143.
"Collin's round this morning was really impressive," Reehoorn said. "He's not afraid to shoot for a low score. He loves to compete and brought it today with a 15-foot par putt to begin the day."
Johnson had the best improvement from round one to two. He opened with a 3-over 75, but fought back to post a 3-under 69 and finish at par 144 overall. He totaled 11 birdies, with eight coming in the second round, five of which were on the back nine.
Nicolas Quintero finished with four birdies and is tied for 60th at 5-over 149.
Oregon State's five at the Husky Individual Invitational also played 36 holes on Tuesday, and two Beavers sit at the top of the leaderboard.
Lake has an 11-under 133 at the par-72 Gold Mountain Cascade Course. He shot a 7-under 65 in the second round of action after opening the day with a 3-under 68.
He leads the individual event.
Lake was followed closely by teammate and freshman Stanley Lin, who totaled back-to-back 5-under 67 rounds.
Lin is just one shot behind of Lake and enters the final 18 Tuesday in second.
Lake and Lin are Nos. 1 and 2 in terms of birdies in the individual tournament. Lake leads with 13 while Lin is close behind with 11.
Brandon Eyre, who shot a combined 4-under 140 on the day, has seven of his own. He opened his day with a 3-under 69 in the first round, followed by a 1-under 71 over the final 18. He enters the last 18 holes tied for 11th.
Zach Miller, in his first competition as a Beaver, shot a 1-over 145 on Monday. He totaled five birdies and enters the final day of action tied for 29th.
Brody Marconi posted a 16-over 160 on the day as the fifth Beaver to compete in the individual tournament.
The Beavers conclude play in both tournaments on Tuesday.
