True Freshman Raya Nakao Shines In Oregon State Debut
September 11, 2023 | Women's Golf
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – True freshman Raya Nakao fired a bogey-free 67 in the second round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in its first tournament of the season on Monday.
Nakao, a native of Kaneohe, Hawai'i, began her collegiate debut with a 2-under 70 with three birdies and one bogey in the morning round before dominating the afternoon with five more birdies and no bogeys for an impressive 5-under 67.
She's tied for second place in the 93-player field with a 7-under 137 and is only one stroke behind individual leader McKenzi Hall of UNLV, who finished the 36-hole day with an 8-under 72-64--136.
"Raya is a competitor," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "She knows her game well, trusts her preparation and is committed to her game plan. (Assistant coach) Katie Kempter and I got to sit back and enjoy the show she put on today."
As a team, the Beavers rallied on the back nine in the second round to post an even-par 288 and moved into a tie for 10th place with a 14-over 302-288--590 at the par-72, 6,354-yard UNM Championship Golf Course.
The final round of the 16-team tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. MT on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
"I know our team will bounce back tomorrow," Shockley said. "We had an unfortunate four-shot penalty that really hurt us in the first round when we were dusting the rust off in our first tournament. We have a great group, who have been working hard all summer, and everything will fall in place as they get more tournament experience."
Super senior Chayse Gomez showed her experience, playing consistent golf throughout the day, and is tied for 20th place with a 1-over 73-72--145. She had two birdies in each round and nothing worse than a bogey.
True freshman Rebecca Kim had two doubles and four bogeys in the first round for a 7-over 79 but settled down in the second round with three birdies and five bogeys for a five-stroke improvement and a 2-over 74.
Veterans Madde Sund and Kyra Ly both improved their scores in the second round, as Sund posted scores of 81-75 and Ly finished the day at 80-77.
